Get a rack mount 24 position switch and mount it under that.

Terminate all of the Cat5e into a 24p patch panel. I would try to get everything set up with a standard rack setup. But after having this for a few years and doing some more reading, I think I would do it different next time. It is pretty similar to what you are proposing.

  • Is there a better way to organize this?.
  • What do you think of the 2 x 12 OnQ patch panels versus getting a 2U vertical wall rack and rack mounted patch panel? I'm going to have a bunch of cables running outside the enclosure regardless.
  • Based on what I've read on the forums a Cisco SG200-26 looks like a good choice.
  • I'm pretty certain I want a managed/smart switch.
  • The wire for the security cameras is Coax so I can't use PoE there either
  • Is there any reason to get a switch with PoE? I don't have any PoE devices right now and a PoE AP isn't a benefit for me.
  • So that leads me the following questions:
  • Wallmounted cable tray to route all the cables to the backside of the shelves and keep things looking tidy.
  • Small shelving system underneath the built-in shelf to hold all the oddly shaped items listed above.
  • Vertical 1U wall rack to hold the switch.
  • 24 port Gigabit Switch mounted vertically on the wall next to the enclosure and under the built-in shelf, ports facing sideways to keep the dust out.
  • This keeps the cables running inside the walls from being moved around as the configuration changes over time.
  • 2 x Onq 12 port Cat5e patch panels mounted inside the enclosure.

So here's how I think I want to arrange it. Their gigabit switch is $130 for just an 8 port!

The structured media enclosure seems like a good way to organize the cables, but your choices are limited on what hardware you can put in there.

  • Synology NAS - desktop model, not a rack mount.
  • 24 port Gigabit Switch - Could get away with a 16 port as I'll only have 11 active connections initially, but rack mount choices are 12 or 24, plus I'd prefer open ports for future expansion.
  • 24 port Patch Panel - Only need 14 connections right now.

So here's what I want to install inside the closet: The builder was even nice enough to run conduit up to the attic and to the outside. This closet is also where all the service connections come in from the outside, so its going to be Node Zero for everything. All of these cables meet up in a closet under the stairs inside a 28" On-Q Structured Wiring Cabinet. There's also cabling for three security cameras with siamese cable (power+RG59).

The builder wired every room with Cat5e and RG6. I'm setting up a networking closet in a house we just purchased and need a few suggestions for network hardware and furniture.
